Dorothy Gilchrist, 81, of Largo, FL, passed away on May 12, 2022, at Suncoast Hospice Care Center in Pinellas Park, FL. Dottie, as she was known to friends and family, was born in Detroit, MI. on May 21, 1940 and depending on who was telling the story was named after a dear relative in Ohio or Judy Garland’s character in the popular movie at the time, “The Wizard of Oz.”
After she graduated from high school in 1958, she began an extensive career working as a secretary in the automotive and manufacturing areas. She would meet her husband-to-be, David L. Gilchrist, in the early 1960s. They would eventually marry in 1965 and start a family with the addition of their son, David J. Gilchrist.
Taking a hiatus from work for several years to raise her son, she would return in the late 1970s. This led to a decade plus career as a school secretary for Center Line Public Schools in Center Line, MI. As her husband retired in late spring of 1998, she would follow later that same year. Even during the first years of retirement, she worked part time at different jobs in Michigan and Florida (where her and her family would relocate in 2000).
Through the years, she enjoyed bowling, dancing, singing in church choirs and cooking. She always looked forward to trying out new (and old) recipes for her family to experience. She was a long-time member of the American Legion Auxiliary Post #273 in Madeira Beach, FL.
Dottie was preceded in death by her husband, David L., parents, William, Sr. and Eva Sudomir and brother, William Sudomir, Jr. She is survived by her son David J., brother, Robert Sudomir; and many extended family & friends.
She will be interred next to her husband at Sarasota National Cemetery at 1:30 pm on Wednesday, May 25, 2022.
