To an Athlete Dying Young
By A. E. Housman
The time you won your town the race
We chaired you through the market-place;
Man and boy stood cheering by,
And home we brought you shoulder-high.
Today, the road all runners come,
Shoulder-high we bring you home,
And set you at your threshold down,
Townsman of a stiller town.
Smart lad, to slip betimes away
From fields where glory does not stay,
And early though the laurel grows
It withers quicker than the rose.
Eyes the shady night has shut
Cannot see the record cut,
And silence sounds no worse than cheers
After earth has stopped the ears.
Now you will not swell the rout
Of lads that wore their honours out,
Runners whom renown outran
And the name died before the man.
So set, before its echoes fade,
The fleet foot on the sill of shade,
And hold to the low lintel up
The still-defended challenge-cup.
And round that early-laurelled head
Will flock to gaze the strengthless dead,
And find unwithered on its curls
The garland briefer than a girl’s.
Love forever, AJ
This reminds us of him — just replace America with England…..
The Soldier
By Rupert Brooke
If I should die, think only this of me:
That there’s some corner of a foreign field
That is for ever England. There shall be
In that rich earth a richer dust concealed;
A dust whom England bore, shaped, made aware,
Gave, once, her flowers to love, her ways to roam;
A body of England’s, breathing English air,
Washed by the rivers, blest by suns of home.
And think, this heart, all evil shed away,
A pulse in the eternal mind, no less
Gives somewhere back the thoughts by England given;
Her sights and sounds; dreams happy as her day;
And laughter, learnt of friends; and gentleness,
In hearts at peace, under an English heaven.
In our hearts forever,
I knew Jason for some time he was a easy man to work with and he always had a smile for everyone he met. He will truly be missed. I’m so sorry for you loss.
I’m heartbroken by the passing of Jason. So many of my favorite childhood memories include him and your family. My condolences to you and your family.
Love,
The Rojahn family
I was so sad to hear about Jason’s passing. I grew up with Jason,those were some crazy years. He was best friends with my boyfriend at the time, named Chris. My heartfelt condolences to the whole family. He was always such a nice guy. So sad and way too young. R.I.P Jason.
Where I did not know Jason, in talking to his son- it felt like I knew him. Because he passed down his wisdom. His humility. His son carries that with him and is proud of his father. God bless this family.
