It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of George Thompson Banister, who departed this life on May 9, 2025, at Bay Pines V.A. Hospice, at the age of 93. Born on October 13, 1931, in Asheville, North Carolina, George lived a life rich in love, service, and achievement.
George was the cherished son of Albert L. and Hazell S. (Smith) Banister. He spent his formative years in a loving home where he developed values that would guide him throughout his life. His early education in Ohio culminated in a degree in Political Science and Business from the University of Ohio. It was here that he laid the groundwork for a life dedicated to both public service and entrepreneurial success.
Upon graduation, George answered the call of duty, serving as a First Lieutenant in the U.S. Army. His military service was marked by honor and dedication, an experience that profoundly shaped his character. After being honorably discharged, George moved to Manhattan, New York, where he began his professional career with Dunn and Bradstreet. Later, he moved to Florida, where he became the Vice President of Florida Federal Savings and Loan, a position he held until his retirement in 1991.
George’s passion for community service extended beyond his professional endeavors. From 1978 to 1982, he served on the advisory Board of the Friends of the Library at Eckerd College, where his leadership culminated in a term as President from 1979 to 1980. His commitment to education and the arts was evident in the countless hours he devoted to promoting literacy and access to knowledge for all.
An enthusiastic historian, George had a particular interest in World War I, which led him to author a book on the subject. His love for history was not only a hobby but a way for him to connect with others and share the lessons of the past.
On April 14, 1979, in Tallahassee, Florida, George married the love of his life, Helma Forg Dorn. Together, they built a beautiful life, sharing 48 loving years of marriage filled with companionship, joy, and mutual support. George is survived by his beloved wife, Helma, and his children from his first marriage, Michaelene Banister of Virginia and George Christian Banister of Arizona. He leaves behind a legacy of love and resilience that will endure in the hearts of his family and friends.
The family invites all who knew and loved George to join in honoring his life. A funeral service with Military Honors will be held at Bay Pines National Cemetery, at a time and date to be determined.
George Thompson Banister will be remembered for his unwavering dedication to family, service, and the pursuit of knowledge. He touched the lives of many and leaves behind a lasting imprint on the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing him. Rest in peace, dear George; your legacy of love and leadership will carry on through your family and community.
