James K. Davis

James K. Davis passed away, suddenly at the age of 81 on January 15 at his home in Tampa, Florida.
Born in Elyria, Ohio and raised in LaGrange, Ohio.
Jim graduated from the Keystone Schools in 1962 and then earned a Bachelor of Science from Bowling Green State University in 1971.
He started his career as a teacher in the Business department with Keystone Local
Schools. After teaching for four years he was recruited as Clerk Treasurer for the
Keystone Local Board of Education. He served in that capacity until coming to the Oberlin School District in May of 1976. He implemented the new chart of accounts for the Oberlin Schools, initiated the computerization of the office for purposes of payables accounting, student activities, and payroll. He was instrumental in the relocation, renovation and addition to several buildings in the District.   He has worked with 10 superintendents during his tenure in Oberlin and 19 Board members.
Known for his integrity and attention to detail, he has consistently attempted to do what he perceived as being in the best interest of the schools. His knowledge of investment     procedures and funding trends, state and local tax laws and collection procedures, as well as state laws and local board policies made him an invaluable asset to the district.
He also served for many years on the School Employees Lorain County Credit Union Board of Trustees and as a member of the Lorain County Treasurers’ Association.
Jim was a proud member of the Oberlin Rotary where he was the recipient of the Paul Harris Fellowship Award for his service to others.
He will be remembered by many as a worker at Blackwood Market, on the square in LaGrange and had many fond memories of Mr. and Mrs. Blackwood.
A friend to many, he is accredited with numerous life changing kindnesses to those fortunate enough to call him friend.
Jim is preceded in death by his parents Charles and Ann (Kilner) Davis.
Those who remain to mourn his passing are his sister Barb (Davis) Shimskey and 7 nieces and nephews as well as the dearest of friends.
In keeping with Jim’s wishes, all services will remain private.
