August 27, 1946 – December 12, 2024
John passed away suddenly on December 12, 2024. He is survived by his brother
William “Bill” Christ, Laurie Swartz, his sister Marika Thiessen (Aaron), and his nieces
Sarah Christ and Rachel Christ-Doane (Patrick).
Born in Ipswich, Massachusetts, John was the firstborn of Christ and Effie Christ. He
graduated from Baylor College of Medicine with dual MD and PhD degrees, completing
his graduate work in physiology under Hebbel E. Hoff, MD, PhD, chairman of the
department of physiology. John dedicated over 13 years of his career to plastic and
reconstructive surgery in Houston, Texas, where his work touched countless lives. He
demonstrated remarkable resilience, overcoming Non-Hodgkin's Mantle Cell
Lymphoma, a challenge that underscored his indomitable spirit.
John was an avid reader, writer and self-publisher, with a deep love for science fiction,
particularly classics like "The Day the Earth Stood Still" and "Forbidden Planet." He was
a Co-founder of Grey Matters (Toastmasters) in Valrico, Florida, where he fostered
community and communication.
A passionate runner, John participated in prestigious races including the Boston
Marathon and Houston Tenneco Marathon. Even in his final days, he remained active,
walking the 2024 Feaster Five the day before Thanksgiving.
John's life was filled with meaningful achievements and deep connections. He leaves
behind a legacy as a family historian, brother, friend, father, and accomplished
professional. His memory will forever inspire those who knew him.
My deepest sympathies to a family that is a very important part of my life.
It is with a deep heart that I say farewell to my good friend, John, whom I met at a Toastmasters meeting. I saw his potential as a public speaker, and together we eventually formed a new Toastmasters club, Grey Matters. I was also privileged to have John, together with Niven, another good friend from Toastmasters, attend a weekly class on stock options at our home. Both gentlemen took to it avidly, and studied diligently from week to week. My heart burst when I read the sad news of John’s passing, especially as I am now in Japan and could not attend to him in his final hours. Rest in peace, my dear friend.
Saddened so much by John’s passing. The world and i personally have lost a wonderful friend and more.
