John Edward Evans “Jack” (79) of Tampa, FL passed away peacefully on August 14th, 2026, surrounded by his family. Born March 30, 1947 in Philadelphia, PA. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and community volunteer. Graduating from the University of Omaha with his BS, and Northern Colorado University with a Masters degree in Psychology. Jack spent 27 years in the United States Marine Corps, retiring as a Major. During his distinguished career, he honorably served in both Vietnam and Operation Desert Storm. His second career was in education at Hillsborough Community College as the Dean of Associate in Science at the Ybor City Campus.
He was proceeded in death by his parents James and Doris Evans, his brothers James and Joseph and his sister Kathleen Grooms (Dan), his sons Todd Jason and Jeffrey John(Zoe).
Jack is survived by his wife Robin Lea Evans, his daughter Jessica Sarah Neal (John) and his four grandchildren; Mason Carter Evans, Colette Elizabeth Neal, Colbie Rose Evans-Meadows and Gemma Jeffree Neal.
Jack was genuinely passionate about social activity. He was an active volunteer at the Raymond James Stadium, Tampa Theatre, The Straz Center of Performing Arts, the Florida Aquarium and a member of the American Legion Post 5. He was deeply tied to his faith and a lifelong member and volunteer at Christ the King Church. Jack was an avid runner, completing several marathons. He enjoyed daily runs, walks, and bike rides. Among his many adventures, he was particularly proud of his journeys along the Camino de Santiago in France and Spain and the St. Patrick’s way in Ireland. Above all, he treasured his family. Jack was deeply loved and will be profoundly missed. His family will carry his memory with them always, along with the many lessons, stories, laughter and moments of love that he gave them.
A memorial funeral Mass will be held at Christ the King Church, Tampa, FL on September 5th at 10:00 am. Followed by military honors at the American Legion Post 5 on Kennedy BLVD. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.
I first had the opportunity meeting Jack at American Legion Post 5. I also was at several events that the American Legion USS Tampa hosted at many different locations and knew him from events that Marine Families had. A man of honor. My condolences and Prayers are with wife Robin, family and friends. Semper Fi Marine. Never to be forgotten.
My deepest condolences to Jack’s beloved family and many friends. I enjoyed working with Jack at HCC since 1987 til I retired in 2015. THEN also enjoyed volunteering with him at the Straz. I was heartbroken when his memory started to decline and am so saddened to hear of his passing. I regret I am unable to attend his services but sent comments to Jessica via Judy Nolasco at HC.
So blessed to have known Jack . There are few words that can express the individual he was and true Patriot he is—-God Bless him and his family…
I first met Jack at the USS TAMPA POST 5 Honor Guard, as honor guard members we went all over Hillsborough doing funerals, and ceremonies, he was always available, great person, and an honorable man, he will be dearly missed, till Valhalla Jack
Jack and I knew each other from 5:30 Mass on Saturdays at CTK. I was a Eucharistic Minister and Jack seemed to be the consummate volunteer, truly giving of himself to our Lord. I got to meet Mason and he was always so happy when he could spend time with him , since he didn’t live here. I’m so sorry I missed his funeral. God bless Jack and his family.
