Lurline was born the younger of two sisters on April 14, 1939 in McNeil, Arkansas to Hollis and Earline Dorrough. She came to faith as a young girl in the Baptist church that she and her family attended. She spent her formative years growing up in McNeil with her older sister, parents and extended family and attending school in the Columbia County public school system. (Lurline also had several other siblings; Sonny, Melvin, Dwayne, Althea and Hollis Rhee)
As a preteen/early teen Lurline and her family moved to Chicago, Illinois. In Chicago, Lurline would attend the Cook County public school system and go onto school in Chicago to become a professional nurse. In her professional nursing career, Lurline spent her career assisting and caring for the elderly, the mentally impaired and the physically impaired. It would be in the nursing field where Lurline would spend her entire professional career, spanning some forty years, before retiring in the early 2000s.
Lurline was a dedicated wife to husband, Woodrow, until his death in 2014. She and Woodrow were married for almost 45 years. She was also a dedicated mother to her five children, Nonita, Linda, Herman, Medgar and Woodrow (II) [Woody]. She was also a dedicated grandmother/great-grandmother to her twelve grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, even raising and assisting in raising several of them. She balanced all of these roles well and did it for a large portion of her adult life.
In 2010, Lurline and her husband, Woodrow, would move to Tampa, FL, which is where they would both remain until their perspective times on earth were complete. Lurline will be greatly missed by all of us who loved her, but we weep as those with a great hope for the future knowing that her faith afforded her a place in eternal glory with the Savior and all of our loved ones who have gone before us in Christ.
Lurline was preceded in death by her husband, Woodrow; her parents, Hollis and Earline and her older sister Dorothy. She is survived by her children Nonita Carr (Husband – Elijah Carr), Linda Samuel, Herman Samuel, Medgar E. Samuel and Woodrow (Woody) Samuel II (Wife – Carmyn J. E.
