Mary Jane Kempski, cherished wife, mother, grandmother, and friend, passed away on December 5, 2025, at Mease Countryside Hospital in Safety Harbor, FL, after an extended illness. She was born on August 28, 1932, in Milwaukee, WI, to George and Agnes (Peterson) Roth. Mary Jane lived a rich and fulfilling life, celebrated for her warmth, kindness, and unwavering dedication to her family.
Mary Jane’s journey began in Milwaukee, where she grew up surrounded by the love of her parents and the vibrant community that shaped her early years. She pursued higher education at the University of Wisconsin, earning a Bachelor’s Degree that paved the way for her to share her passions with others. For three years, she taught physical education and synchronized swimming, inspiring countless young athletes with her dedication and enthusiasm.
On July 30, 1955, Mary Jane married the love of her life, Ralph A. Kempski, in a ceremony held at the Ascension Lutheran Church in Milwaukee. Together, they shared a remarkable 70 and a half years of marriage, built on mutual love, support, and faith. As Ralph pursued his calling in ministry, Mary Jane embraced the role of homemaker and mother, tirelessly supporting him in his endeavors and nurturing their family.
Mary Jane was a proud member of several organizations, including the University of Wisconsin Alumni, the Delta Zeta Sorority, and the League of Women Voters. Her faith was a guiding light in her life, and she was an active member of St. Mark Episcopal Church, where she made lasting connections and friendships. For 17 years, she served as a docent at the Indianapolis Museum of Art, sharing her love for art and culture with visitors and enriching the community.
Throughout her life, Mary Jane and Ralph moved frequently due to his ministry as a pastor and the Bishop, living in cities such as Minneapolis, Louisville, KY, West Lafayette, IN, Indianapolis, Santa Claus, IN, and Aiken, S.C., before settling in Tampa, FL. Each new location brought about new adventures and experiences that Mary Jane cherished deeply. Her life was characterized by her hospitality, graciousness, and a welcoming spirit. She had a unique sensitivity to the needs of others, always ready to lend a helping hand or a listening ear.
Family was the cornerstone of Mary Jane’s life, and she found her greatest fulfillment in nurturing her relationships. She is survived by her beloved husband, Ralph; her children, Richard (Terri), Joan Baker (Scott), and John (Eileen); as well as seven grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren. Each member of her family was a source of immense pride and joy, and she created a legacy of love that will endure through generations.
Mary Jane was not only a devoted family member but also an avid traveler. Together with Ralph and their family, she explored the world, creating countless memories and friendships along the way. Her adventures took her to places near and far, but it was the love of her family that made every journey meaningful.
A funeral service to honor Mary Jane’s life will be held on February 28, 2026, at 10:00 AM at St. Mark Episcopal Church in Tampa, FL. The family kindly requests donations be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Lutheran World Relief, and Tampa Metro Ministries, organizations that align with Mary Jane’s compassionate spirit and commitment to helping others.
Mary Jane Kempski lived a blessed life, leaving an indelible mark on all who had the privilege to know her. She was a blessing to everyone she encountered and will be profoundly missed. Her legacy of love, kindness, and dedication to family will forever remain in the hearts of those she touched.
