Richard McKenna

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Richard McKenna, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, who left this world peacefully after an extended illness on March 17, 2026. Richard’s journey began in Flushing, New York, where he was born on December 7, 1941, to Harold and Elizabeth (Sill) McKenna. He was a cherished son, brother to his twin sister Diane Shank, and a devoted family man.

Richard moved to Clearwater, Florida, over 50 years ago, where he built a life filled with love, adventure, and community service. A passionate entrepreneur, Richard owned and operated “Mandalay Surf and Sport” on Clearwater Beach for more than four decades. His business was not only a staple in the community but also a gathering place where stories were shared and friendships forged. Richard’s dedication to his work and his community knew no bounds, as he generously sponsored numerous youth sports programs, believing firmly in the potential of young people.

In 1962, Richard married the love of his life, Linda Merrell, marking the beginning of a beautiful 63-year journey filled with shared dreams, laughter, and unwavering support for one another. Together, they raised two wonderful daughters, Lynne and the late Betsy, and celebrated the joys of family with their grandsons, Kevin and Patrick Dilella, and son-in-law Vince Dilella. His family was the center of his universe, and his pride in their achievements was boundless.

An avid fisherman, Richard found solace in the gentle ebb and flow of the ocean, often casting a line in the hopes of a catch but ultimately savoring the peace and reflection that came with the sport. His love for the sea was a metaphor for his approach to life—patient, hopeful, and ever appreciative of the beauty around him.

Richard’s passing leaves a void in the hearts of those who knew him, but his legacy of kindness, integrity, and resilience will continue to inspire all who were fortunate to be a part of his life. He is predeceased by his parents, Harold and Elizabeth, and his beloved daughter Betsy. He leaves behind his devoted wife Linda, daughter Lynne and her husband Vince, grandsons Kevin and Patrick, and sister Diane, who all cherish the memories and lessons he imparted.

A service to honor and celebrate Richard’s life will be held on March 19, 2026, at 3:00 PM at St. Paul United Methodist Church, located at 1498 Rosery Rd NE, Largo, FL 33770. Inurnment will be held at Sylvan Abbey Memorial Park at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to Tunnel to Towers, a testament to Richard’s commitment to helping others.

Richard’s proudest achievements were not only in his successful business ventures but in the enduring love he shared with Linda, a testament to their unbreakable bond. As we say goodbye, we hold onto the love that will forever bind our hearts to his.

“Love always for wife, Linda.”
