February 23, 1946 to March 29, 2026
Robert Ellis Stetson, known to many as Bob, passed away on March 29, 2026, at the age of 80 in Clearwater, Florida. He was born in St. Petersburg, Florida, to Leslie Quincy Stetson and Laverne Lucille Myers Stetson. In his earlier years, Bob was an athlete at St. Petersburg High School, where he played football as captain of the team, ran track and field, and played baseball. He went on to play football at New Mexico Highlands University.
Bob proudly served as a Marine in Vietnam as a combat photographer. Several of his photographs are preserved in the National Archives and Records Administration as part of the historical record of the Vietnam War. His service instilled in him a deep sense of duty and commitment that he carried throughout his life. After his military service, he continued working in photography and later went on to work at Rogers Cleaners, Transitions Optical, and Bay Pines VA. He shared a loving 46 year marriage with his late wife, Catherine Stetson, a partnership that remained a central and lasting part of his life. They settled in Seminole, Florida, where they built a life together and raised their two children.
Bob was known for his easygoing nature and kind heart. He enjoyed woodworking, photography and watching westerns. He was a passionate sports fan who loved rooting for the Tampa Bay Rays, Miami Marlins and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He also had a deep affection for animals, especially dogs. His beloved dogs Tia, Ty, Toby and Teddy, his “puppy fan club,” brought him constant companionship and joy. In his later years, he developed a fondness for collecting Stetson Hat Company memorabilia, a fitting nod to his name.
He is survived by his son, Robert Ellis Stetson Jr.; his daughter, Jennifer Lynn Stetson; and his sister, Darlene Stetson Meyers. He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered always.
A memorial service will be held on May 1, 2026, at 12:30 PM at Bay Pines National Cemetery. All who knew him are invited to join in celebrating his life. Robert E Stetson’s memorial page – Honor Veterans Legacies at VLM
