Robert J. “Bob” Thompson

Robert J. “Bob” Thompson, 80, of Largo, Florida, passed away peacefully on August 26, 2026, at Suncoast Hospice Care Center, Pinellas Park, FL, after a courageous battle with metastatic bladder cancer. Born August 17, 1946, in New Bedford, Massachusetts, to James and Helen Thompson, Bob built a life defined by love, loyalty, and deep connections.
On April 24, 1983, Bob married Elizabeth “Betsy” Talbott-Rodrigues. For 43 years, they were best friends and partners through every joy and challenge. Bob was a devoted husband, father, brother, grandfather, and great-grandfather whose greatest legacy is the love he shared with his family. He was known for his humor, his love of storytelling, his cooking, especially his famous meatloaf and his ability to make everyone feel valued. A lifelong, passionate Boston sports fan, he remained forever loyal to his New England roots and teams.
Bob proudly served in the United States Coast Guard from 1966 to 1970, stationed in Sitka, Alaska, and Marblehead, Ohio. A Commissaryman Third Class, he was awarded the National Defense Service Medal and Good Conduct Medal. He remained an active member of The American Legion, Post 273, in Madeira Beach, Florida. Professionally, Bob dedicated 24 years to City Electric in St. Petersburg, Florida, following long tenures with Baynes Electric and Mendall Electric in Massachusetts.
Bob is survived by his wife, Betsy; his brother, David F. Thompson (Mary Ann); his four children: Tracey M. Thompson (Paul), David L. Thompson (Tammy), James G. Thompson, and Dr. Courtney E. Jones (Greg); six grandchildren: Justin D. Abreu, Samantha C. Wamsley, Brendan R. Ray, Aisyn M. Thompson, Ian A. Jones, and Ainsleigh E. Jones; and four great-grandchildren: Cora R. Abreu, Aurora J. Abreu, Orion K. Abreu, and Xena. He also leaves behind six beloved nephews.
The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Morton Plant Hospital and Suncoast Hospice for their compassionate care. Bob’s life was not defined by its end, but by the laughter, stories, and deep love he leaves behind. To those who knew him, there will never be another quite like him.
An honor service and burial will be held at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Tunnel to Towers Foundation (www.T2T.org).
My prayers to entire family. Did not know Bob well, but knew Betsy. I pray for peace for all. Memories of Bob will live on in all the family and friends.
Words can’t describe how grateful I am to have had such a wonderful person as my uncle. I will never forget how hard I’d laugh right before dinner was ready, I will never forget how hard I’d laugh after dinner was over, Uncle Bob knew how to radiate a room with positivity and love. May he rest in peace, and his legacy live on.
Bob was a great guy and dear friend. I will miss his humor which always made me laugh and smile.
