Russell Robert Martinson, a devoted family man and a pillar of his community, passed away peacefully at the Grove at Countryside at the age of 95. Born on January 26, 1931, in Glen Ridge, New Jersey, to Russell C. and Helen (Wiggburg) Martinson, Russell lived a life rich in love, service, and dedication.
A proud veteran, Russell served his country honorably in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. After his service, he embarked on a distinguished career as a machinist and engineer with I.B.M., where he dedicated over 35 years of his life. Even in retirement, his passion for problem-solving and technology led him to work with H. R. Block, where he contributed his IT expertise until the remarkable age of 90.
Russell’s life was beautifully intertwined with that of his beloved wife, Josephine Farinola, whom he married on June 30, 1956, at St. Finbar’s Roman Catholic Church in Brooklyn, NY. Together, they shared 69 wonderful years of marriage until Josephine’s passing in November 2025. Russell often spoke of their marriage as his proudest achievement, a testament to their enduring love and partnership.
A man of many talents, Russell was known for his skills in woodworking, mechanical clock repair, and his prowess as an expert sharpshooter. He found joy on the golf course and in the tranquility of fishing, pursuits he shared with friends at the Dutchess Golf and Country Club. His commitment to safety and education was evident in his role as a firearms safety instructor for the N.R.A., and he was an esteemed member of the Knights of Columbus, where he held the distinguished position of Grand Knight.
Russell’s life was not only defined by his accomplishments but also by his deep love for his family. He is survived by his children Ann Marie Tiernan, Russell (Teresa), Peter (Ginger), and Maryellen (Paul) Conrad; grandchildren Lisa (Lawrence), Robert (Heather), Amanda (Devon), Katherine (Max), Jessica (John), Karl (Kim), Brandon, and Lyndsey; great-grandchildren Maya, Landon, and Rylee; and his brother Franklyn Martinson. His legacy lives on in their hearts and the countless memories they shared.
A service to celebrate Russell’s life will be held on November 6, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at Veterans Funeral Care, located at 830 No. Belcher Rd., Clearwater, FL 33765. A graeside service will follw at 12:30 PM at Bay Pines National Cemetery in St. Petersburg, FL.
