Steven Thomas Smallwood, 72 years of age of Largo, FL died unexpectedly on February 1, 2023 with family by his side at Largo Medical Center following a three week hospitalization.
Steve was born on March 3, 1950 in Palo Alto, CA to Thomas Smallwood and Mildred Ann Bechtel (Nee Campbell).
He was survived by his son, Adam Smallwood; Jacklyn Smallwood, mother of his son; sisters, Jan Hudson (Rich) and Robin Vera; brother, Chris Musgrove (Dawn);
granddaughter, Saphia Rea Jones Smallwood; nephews, Kirby Wallace and Juliano Vera (Esther); niece, Christa Maney (John); great-nieces & nephews, Emery, Rowan, Eisley, Amos & Alex.
Steve grew up and went to school in Montgomery County, MD. He enlisted in the Marines, served in Vietnam and was a two-time Purple Heart recipient. Upon his return home to Maryland he worked in computer data entry. He also lived San Marcos, TX where he learned and worked in surveying. When Steve moved back to the east coast he settled in Largo, FL near his family.
Steve enjoyed camping, hiking, spelunking and being in the out of doors in his younger years. Later in life he enjoyed watching football and NASCAR, reading Sci- Fi novels, studying maps, and fixing things. This lead him to being a handyman and a property caretaker to some of the homes of the neighbors in his community where he met Elizabeth “Lisa” Wasson, his companion of many years. Together they enjoyed traveling throughout the US and abroad.
He was preceded in death by his father Thomas Smallwood, mother Mildred Ann Bechtel, step-dad Jack Bechtel, step-dad Robert Musgrove, grandmother Ora Dale Musgrove, nephew Nicholas Musgrove, and his companion Lisa Wasson.

There will be a service on Friday, November 17, 2023 at 2:30 at the Bay Pines National Cemetery by the Veterans Funeral Care.
