Thomas Gary Atwell, 67, of St. Petersburg, Florida passed away, Tuesday, October 2, 2018. Tom was born on May 28, 1951 in Cheverly, Maryland, a son of the late Charles Edward Atwell and Dorothy Walker Atwell.
Tom received a Bachelor’s Degree in business from St. Leo’s University. He retired from the United States Army after 24 years of service. He retired as a Chief Warrant Officer 3. Chief Warrant Officers are advanced level experts of both the technical and tactical aspects of leading in their field. He served stateside posts with assignments in Vietnam, Korea, and Somalia. After his retirement, he worked at Bay Pines Regional Office for 17 years, retiring in 2013 as a Super Senior Veteran’s Representative.
Besides his parents, Tom was preceded in death by his first wife, Cynthia Bauer Atwell. Survivors include his wife, Martha (Marty) Atwell of St. Petersburg, Florida, children: James Atwell of Largo, Florida, Tracy Ingram of New Port Richey, Florida, John Thomas Atwell of Seminole, Florida, and Kevin Lesinski of Waynesburg, Pennsylvania, 8 grandchildren, and siblings: Robert Atwell of Jacksonville, North Carolina, Charles Atwell, Jr. of Raleigh, North Carolina, James Atwell of Annapolis, Maryland, and Elaine O’Connor of Royal Palm Beach, Florida.
The family will receive friends from 1:30 to 2:30 on Sunday, October 7, 2018 at the Seminole United Methodist Church, 5400 Seminole Boulevard, Seminole, Florida 33772. Nancy Weil will officiate. A funeral service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Burial will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery, 5750 49th Street North, St. Petersburg, Florida 33709. Memorial contributions may be made to the Fisher House. Checks should be made payable to Bay Pines VAHCS with the memo section of the check indicating Fisher House GPF#1093 Thomas Atwell.
