Thomas J. Voorhees – 1st LT-USMC

Thomas J. Voorhees, born June 2, 1931, in Paterson, NJ, passed away on December 18, 2018, in Dunedin, FL.  He was 87.  As a young man, Tom’s first love was sports.  He ran track and played basketball and at 15, he was State Champion in Cross Country.  Tom received a 4-year scholarship to Georgetown University.  He went on to be a runner for 3 World Record relay teams.  In 1953, Tom volunteered for Officer Training School with the United States Marine Corps  and upon graduating, Tom became a First Lieutenant in the Marines.  Tom was hand selected by the United States to join the first U.S. Olympic Modern Pentathlon Team, competing in swimming, shooting, running, fencing and horse jumping.  After his service in the Marine Corps, Tom entered the business world and for 32 years was in the electronics and computer industries.  In 1961 Tom married his beloved Gloria and had three wonderful children, (Joseph, Kellie and Thomas), who still reside in their home state of New Jersey.  Tom‘s wife Gloria passed away on November 28, 2020. A memorial service is planned in the spring of 2021 for both Thomas and Gloria by their children.
