Vernon Howard


Vernon Howard, age 90, of Clearwater, Florida, Died March 6th, 2024, at the Morton Plant Hospital following a heart attack.

On May 22nd, 1933, he was born in Lewisport, Kentucky, the son of the late Benson Eugene Howard and Willie Ellen Cooper.

On November 4th, 1976, he married Jacquelyn May Schlosser Vowels at the Little Church of The West in Las Vegas, Nevada. Together, they shared 47 years of marriage.

Survivors include: Wife Jacquelyn Howard, sons Darrin (Becky) Howard, and Eric (Karen) Howard, daughter Amy (Dennis), and sister Barbara Delong. Grandchildren Amber Hendricks, Jalene Howard, Riley Howard, Mitchell (Jennifer) Teachout, Victoria Teachout, and Jaimie ( Chad ) Albert. Great grandchildren Vaeda, Austin, Christopher, Charlie, Justin, Stephanie and Brandon. With two more on the way.

He was preceded in death by His parents, Benson and Willie Howard, and his brother, Paul (Dewey) Howard.

After Vernon’s time in the Army, he worked in the life insurance world. Working at a few smaller agencies, he spent most of his career at Gleaner Life Insurance Company as a Vice President of his underwriting division, retiring in 1994.

He was a devoted Christian who worshiped at the Holt United Methodist Church.

Born in Kentucky, he moved to Holt, Michigan, where he grew up. He spent much of his adult life in Adrian, raising his kids. After he retired, he moved to East Lansing and spent his winter months between East Lansing and Clearwater, Florida.

Vernon loved golf, fishing, bowling, spending time with his family, and having O-B-Joyfuls with his friends. He loved playing cards and laughed as much as he could.

His proudest achievements were bowling a 300, having five hole-in-ones during golf, serving in the Korean War, and being a wonderful husband, father, brother, grandfather, and uncle.

Vernon was always smiling. He loved life, his family, and everyone he had a chance to be friends with. He was the most loving, caring human being anyone had the honor of meeting. We will miss you every day.
